5 Master Bedroom Decorating Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Your bedroom should be a place where you can retreat at the end of the day to relax and unwind. It’s also the place where you start the day. Creating a bedroom that is both relaxing and energizing can be a challenge. Keep in mind that you likely spend approximately one-third of your life in your bedroom.

Sure, you are asleep for a lot of that time, but for some of that time, you may be simply relaxing or getting ready for the day. That means your master bedroom needs to be beautiful, practical, and functional. However, that is not always the case. Mistakes are often made when decorating the bedroom, so I’ve identified some and provided master bedroom decorating ideas to fix them.

1. Bedding That Is All One Color

Bedding is a great way to bring color into your master bedroom, so why not use it? The one-color approach is kind of boring. The bed is usually the focal point of the bedroom, so why not make it worth looking at? You don’t have to go crazy, if that’s not your thing, and remember that bold colors are not best for the bedroom. Blue is considered calming, while darker colors like red are considered too energetic.

Instead, choose softer tones, with a few stronger tones and some patterns mixed in, such as those seen here with the Barclay Butera Newport Crystal Cove Queen Size Upholstered Panel Headboard in Custom Fabric. The headboard features three upholstered panels, creating a look that is charming and inviting.

2. Giant Bed with Baby Bedside Tables

The scale is important in a master bedroom, as with any room. Beware of bedside tables that are too small for the bed, especially if you have a king-size bed. Luckily, this is easy to fix. I think of it like this: if you are lying down, you should be able to reach over and turn on/off your alarm, pick up glasses, or anything else on the bedside table without having to reach too far up or down.

3. Bedside Tables with Nothing on Them

A bedside table with a lonely lamp or worse nothing on it is a sad sight indeed. I’m not saying your bedside table should be filled with clutter (more on that later), but you do want a few items to show your personal style. This Criteria Nightstand with 3 Drawers by Bernhardt features a beautiful lamp as well as a picture and glass — the perfect balance between too much and too little. The nightstand’s drawers give you plenty of space to stow anything else you need.

4. Hard Floors with No Rug

This is another rule that is appropriate for just about any room. However, especially in the bedroom, it can be a shock to put your feet on a cold, hard floor first thing in the morning. No matter the size or style, a rug on a hard floor in your bedroom is essential. In addition to comfort, a rug adds another layer of texture to your room. The more layers, the cozier your master bedroom will feel.

5. Too Much Clutter

It’s hard to relax in a cluttered space. It just seems like everything in the space is demanding your attention. Getting rid of clutter will help make your master bedroom more relaxing. Take a look at what you have and what you need. Get rid of anything you no longer use. I know this can be the hard part. Then, take stock of what you have left and find a place for it. Add shelving and storage if needed.

Check out your master bedroom and see if you’ve made any of these mistakes. With a few tweaks, you’ll find your bedroom looks better, and you’ll feel better in it.
