8 Tips for Decorating a Bedroom from Baer’s Furniture

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, a place to relax and unwind. Often, the bedroom gets short-changed when it comes to design. But that can be fixed with a few simple changes. Follow the tips below to create a bedroom so delightful you won’t want to leave it.

Gentle Lavender Creates a Soothing Space for Relaxation

1. Choose Your Color

Of course, you should choose a color you love. However, certain colors evoke certain moods. Some shades can either relax or stimulate you, so when you are considering colors for your bedroom, think about the mood you want to create. For example, blue is a calming color that can help you get more and better sleep. Yellow encourages relaxation and adds coziness to a space. When you sleep in a green room, you are more likely to wake up feeling positive and upbeat. Silver’s soothing metallic tones are luxurious, but can also make you feel like exercising. Orange adds warmth and helps your muscles relax, which in turn can help you sleep. Purple is mentally stimulating and may make it difficult to switch off after a long, tiring day.

2. Comfortable Flooring

The flooring of your bedroom is the foundation for the space. If you have wood or tile on the floor, add a plush, shag area rug to cozy up the space. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, an area rug can provide a layer of texture in the space.

3. Once Upon a Theme

It’s not uncommon to have a theme for a child or teen room, so why not for adults? Often adults are leery of themed rooms, but we’re not talking Star Wars sheets here (unless that’s your thing, then go for it). Whether it be country cottage, tropical vacation, or mid-century modern, deciding on a design theme gives you a unifying device for your décor.

4. Throw Pillows: The Controversy

Throw pillows can be a controversial subject when designing a bedroom. Some like enough throw pillows to create a headboard effect, others think even an extra pillow sham is too much. A good rule of thumb is to have enough pillows so that your bed looks comfortable, cozy, and luxurious. But not so many that you need to go on an archeological dig to get into bed. Most people are comfortable with 2–6, depending on the size of the bed.

A Bench at the Foot of the Bed Gives You Extra Seating

5. Have a Seat

If you have space, a place to sit that is not the bed is nice for a bedroom. It can be as simple as a bench or ottoman at the end of the bed where you can sit to put on or take off your shoes. Bonus points if you choose one that gives you extra storage. Or a separate seating area with a small table and chair that is perfect for reading.

6. Ban the Tech

The bedroom should be about relaxing and sleeping, so keep the tech to a minimum. It’s difficult in our increasingly connected world, but if you keep the tech out of the bedroom you’ll be happier. This includes the television. Sleeping with the television on will keep your mind buzzing and interfere with the quality of your sleep. Some say keep your cell phone out of the bedroom completely, but for many that is just not realistic. If you have a cell phone instead of a land line, keep your phone on the dresser by the door, or in the adjacent bathroom so that it is handy in an emergency but doesn’t disturb your sleep. It should be placed so that you can hear it if needed.

7. Let There Be Light

For the bedroom, you want lighting that is flattering and functional. If you like to read before bed, a bedside lamp is essential. Space-saving sconces, a pair of bedside lamps, and pendant lights are all used in bedrooms. Avoid direct overhead light or too much light directed in one spot.

8. Things You Love

Again, depending on space, display as many of the items that you love as you can in your bedroom. It’s your space, so you should be surrounded by your favorite things. A small cluster of your favorite pieces, things that make you smile, will make your bedroom feel just right. This is also a way to incorporate pieces you’ve collected over the years into your décor but maybe weren’t sure how to display.
