Celebrating Book Lovers Day? Give Your Tomes a Shelf to Adore

The best day of the year is fast approaching! It’s National Book Lover’s Day! To be honest, this is probably the best holiday of the year. In general, although I celebrate all holidays that involve food and candy, this is the one holiday I celebrate for love. The love of books.

How often do you have the opportunity to devote a full day to celebrating your love of reading and all the ways books have influenced your life over the years. From your first Little Golden Book The Pokey Puppy to Harry Potter to David McCullogh’s riveting biography of John Adams, to the guilty pleaser that is Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, to the book you love more than any other, even though no one you know has ever heard of it. If you are a book lover, it’s time to give your books a shelf they’ll adore as much as you adore them.

Find the Perfect Shelf for Your Books

Choosing a bookshelf for your living room, home office, or reading nook should be a well-researched and informed decision. Your bookshelf should not only make a statement, it should also make your books feel at home. The right bookshelf will not only give your books the home they deserve, it has the potential to become an attractive focal point.

Begin by measuring your room and deciding where you want to put the bookshelf. Consider where you will put it — you want to be sure that there is enough room for you to walk by and that it won’t overwhelm the other pieces of furniture in the room. Remember to measure not just the floor space, but the ceiling and the wall space. Also, keep in mind that you can rearrange your furniture to make sure your bookshelf is in the perfect place.

Create a Mindful Display

Decide what you are going to put on your bookshelf. If you are like me, you have many more books than will fit on one shelf. So you’ll have to make some mindful choices. And although books are the traditional choice, and it is book lovers day, you don’t have to put only books on your shelf. Knick-knacks, photos, and collectables are quickly becoming popular items to display. Knowing which books and accent pieces you want to display will help you decide how much space you need.

Consider your existing décor as you choose your bookshelf. For example, if your style is minimalistic, you don’t want to choose a heavily embellished piece. Something with sleek, simple lines will work better. Style, material, and color are all features you need to take into consideration. You may not be able to exactly match the color, or maybe you like an eclectic look, that’s ok. Just make sure the piece you choose “goes with” your current style.

Once you’ve done all this, you’ll be ready to fill that empty space with the perfect bookshelf, and then fill the bookshelf with the books you love. Again, if you’re like me, there will always be one book missing from the shelf.
