Choosing Furniture that Will Last for Generations

Buying furniture is a big investment and for many, these are pieces that will make a house into a home. While trends come and go, some furniture is a true investment that can last for generations.

When choosing furniture that will go into new homes time and time again, you are choosing pieces that will be passed on with fond memories. Maybe you remember always sitting around grandma’s dining room table during Thanksgiving or recall the curio your aunt always kept the kids away from. Now, it’s your turn to find pieces that will be passed on to your children and their children.

While you’re researching sizes, colors and styles, consider the following if you plan to invest in furniture that can be handed down.

Invest in Good Quality

You want to invest in quality furniture, which means you might have pay a bit more. However, paying for the quality furniture means it will last longer and you’ll be able to hand down furniture that still looks good decades later. Specifically, seek out pieces feel heavy and firm. Look at the details of the piece. Do the drawers fit perfectly into their slots? Is the finish smooth and even? Are the hinges good quality and do they open and close smoothly?

Choose Useful Pieces

If you intend to have your furniture last for several decades, choose useful pieces such as a dining room table, chest, chairs or a small cabinet. Size must also be factored in when choosing these pieces. It may not be easy to pass on a large, stacked curio, but a dining room table perfect for seating four could be used in most any home or apartment.

Go for a Classic Design

It’s easy to want to stay on top of trends, however, by doing so you limit the life of the furniture. Buy furniture with a look that stands the test of time, but don’t compromise your style. Quality leather sofas or chairs are a great option, as are solid, wood dining sets. Go for something classic, but make sure it’s also furniture that you will like in your home.

Lastly, and possibly most importantly, take good care of the furniture. Get information on what kind of what it is made of, how it can be cleaned and how it can be repaired. Avoid exposing the furniture to too much direct sunlight, which can be tricky in Florida. Keep wood surfaces clean and polished. And don’t forget to pass down this knowledge to the furniture’s new owners. A little bit of elbow grease goes a long way when you intend to have furniture last several generations.
