Coffee Table Décor: Design a Stunning Living Room Focal Point

In order for a living room to be a living room, it needs to feel warm and inviting. After all, this is the space where you will spend most of your free time. Once you’ve chosen the perfect sofa for lounging and the right amount of chairs for entertainment seating, you’ll probably be turning your attention to that other living room staple: the coffee table. And the way you accessorize your coffee table will make all the difference in creating the atmosphere you want in this important room.

Coffee tables come in so many different styles and shapes that they are often beautiful on their own. However, if you want to keep your coffee table from becoming merely a repository for “stuff” or an impromptu seat for a (hopefully) light child, you’ll need to turn your coffee table into a truly stunning focal point.

Tommy Bahama Landara Cocktail Table

A bowl on a coffee table draws the eye and pulls you into the space. If you like your rooms with as little clutter as possible, this a great option. The coffee table above could be a focal point even if it was unadorned. However, you can increase its wow factor by putting a large bowl in the center of the table and filling it with colorful or unique objects. If the bowl is white, a colorful collection of seashells will catch the eye. Or if you prefer more colorful décor, choose a red bowl and create contrast by filling it with a monochromatic collection. There’s no end of options when you put a bowl on a table. Nesting bowls or one large, unfilled bowl can also be used to make an impact.

With their beautiful shapes and vibrant colors, flowers are a natural choice for the focal point in any room. On a coffee table, flowers immediately draw the eye, adding vibrant color or subtle softness to the space. If you prefer an understated display, use flowers with small blossoms in bright colors. For an eye-catching, extravagant focal point, large flowers and overflowing greenery will do the trick.

Tommy Bahama Glass-Topped Coffee Table

Books make a great focal point, especially old books with interesting covers or the proverbial coffee table book full of gorgeous photography. You can leave it open to your favorite spread to create even more impact. Or stack your books for visual interest, either a few low stacks or one tall one. If you place one larger book or a low stack of a few books on your coffee table, display some taller objects to move the eye around the space. This makes a more visually pleasing focal point that is contained entirely on the coffee table.

Above, the glass-topped coffee table with rattan stretchers is enhanced by the small bowl of fruit, low stack of books, and tall wine glasses that keep the eye moving.

It can take a little ingenuity and creative thinking to turn your coffee table into an eye-catching focal point. It may even take several attempts to get it right, but don’t worry. With a little out-of-the-box thinking, you will have a display that not only works with your room but reflects your personal style.
