Now that we are in the New Year, it’s a good time to consider some interior design resolutions. As you recommit to going to the gym, eating healthy, or even just being more organized, consider making some resolutions for your interior design. You’ll find that you can create an impact if you make a few simple changes in your home.
Resolve to Freshen Up Your Interior Décor
If you find yourself bored by your interior design, the New Year is a great time to change your style. Maybe you just moved and haven’t had time to do much decorating, or maybe you have been living in the same home for years and it needs a little pick-me-up. Resolve to freshen up your interior décor.
Begin by mixing textures and patterns to bring warmth into your living space. Go bold and choose a sofa with a vibrant pattern, or in one of the vibrant shades of green or red that are trending now. If you want to be able to change your décor on a regular basis, pick neutral furniture and upholstery. Use accents such as throw pillows, chunky blankets, and stunning artwork to liven up the room.
Look for area rugs with warm tones and plush fabrics — shag area rugs are hot this year — to add softness and texture. They can be used over wood flooring, tiles, or even over wall-to-wall carpeting. The size, style, or color can enhance the personality of your home.
Resolve to Transform Your Home
Take stock of your furniture pieces and see if any need to be replaced. Is your favorite recliner sagging? Is your coffee table out of style? Does your mattress have a big lump in it? Worn out or outdated furniture is not only unpleasant to look at, it is often uncomfortable to sit on or lie upon. The New Year is the ideal time to choose some new, quality furniture.
Get out your tape measure and measure your room, including entrances and doorways, to see how much room you have to work with. Block out the area where you will be placing your new pieces to see how much space you have. This will help you visualize your space and make sure you have enough room to move around.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends replacing your mattress about every 8 years. If you wait longer than that, you may be robbing yourself of a restful night’s sleep. Resolving to replace your mattress will have a direct effect on your health and well-being.
Resolve to Change the Layout of Your Furniture
Does your room flow? Have you replaced your old furniture, but the room still doesn’t seem quite right? Maybe the flow of each room could be improved. When the relationship of items to one another creates a pleasing look and feel, your room is balanced. A symmetrical balance will make your home serene and peaceful, the perfect environment for relaxing after a long day. Or, if you want some excitement or drama in a room where you entertain regularly, go for asymmetrical balance by pairing opposite colors and sizes together.
These New Year’s resolutions just might be the ones you can keep. While big changes can seem daunting, by taking it step-by-step you can achieve your goals.
