Make Your Balcony the Perfect Hang-Out Spot All Year Long
Balconies are by their very nature casual, cool, comfortable places to hang out and relax. If you’re fortunate enough to have a balcony and you don’t use it to kick back and de-stress, you’re missing some serious downtime. Whether you live in a condo or a townhouse in Florida’s lush tropical climate, if you have a balcony, don’t let it go to waste.
Use these tips to make your balcony the perfect hangout spot all year long.
Furnish Your Balcony with Comfortable Seating
You can’t hang out in a comfortable place to sit or stretch out. An outdoor sofa lets you read, nap, or just daydream in style on your balcony. Add even more comfort with extra pillows and throws. They don’t just make your balcony look good; they also make it look like a welcoming oasis amid a sea of chaos.
Balconies are not known for being spacious, so multipurpose furniture is critical. An outdoor ottoman can serve as a footstool, an impromptu table, and, of course, additional seating when needed. Add a bar or console table for entertaining. A table and two chairs make the balcony the ultimate place for morning coffee or evening cocktails for two if you are short on space.
Natural materials work well in outdoor spaces, so consider light-colored wood or wicker furniture that can withstand the outdoor elements.
Bring in Some Plants
Plants on a balcony are a no-brainer, and with plenty of sunshine, they get everything they need to green your space. Potted plants make it easy to add some plants to the space. Consider a flowering vine such as passionflower, morning glory, or coral honeysuckle. Their beautiful blooms will add vibrant energy to the balcony.
You can even grow citrus such as Meyer Lemon, navel oranges, and key limes on your balcony if you keep them well-trimmed. There’s nothing like the scent of citrus mixed with honeysuckle on a warm summer night.
Soften the Space with Rugs
Not everyone thinks to put a rug on their balcony, but it can go a long way to making the space comfortable and transforming into a perfect spot to sit and stay a spell. Don’t be shy about choosing bold colors and a few floor cushions to soften the space. Rich jewel tones such as vivid violets, vibrant reds, sunny yellows, and energetic blues are great choices.
Light Up the Night
Of course, during the day, you’ll get plenty of light on your balcony, but you want it to be welcoming when darkness falls as well. Hang a pendant light that offers plenty of warm, ambient lighting. This will give you plenty of lighting for small gatherings and intimate conversations without throwing glare into everyone’s eyes.
If you don’t want to hardwire lighting on your balcony, add some candles instead. The magic candles will bring to a space can be pretty incredible. Flameless lanterns are great for a rustic look and feel, and scented candles will level up your balcony game.
Accessorize Your Balcony
Some love them, some hate them, but the right wind chimes are the perfect accessory for balconies. The gentle tinkling in the breeze is a soothing background sound to hear as you nap or read. And don’t forget your wall space. Add shelving for plants and pottery, or hang a piece of art to complement the décor.
